Investing in massage is an investment in your health.  Here is a brief description of what you should expect with each of the modalities we offer:

Ashiatsu:

Meaning “foot” (ashi) “pressure” (atsu), ashiatsu is a deeply relaxing and therapeutic massage performed with the therapist’s feet.  People often have a hard time deciphering whether they are feeling hands or feet.  Because of the length and strength of the legs, the therapist can apply long, deep strokes that start at the feet, coming up over the back, and down the arm.  The feet also have a larger surface area than hands so deeper pressure is more relaxing than it might be using a thumb or elbow.

Ashiatsu is a great relaxation massage, but can also be a great way the help lengthen the sore muscles of cyclists, runners, dancers, and yogis.  Ashiatsu is not recommended for pregnant women, or anyone with Osteoperosis.

Ashiatsu is offered at our downtown office, located in the Austin Metropolitan Club.

Deep Tissue Massage:

Deep tissue massage is designed to relieve tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia, and also to break up scar tissue that might be hindering blood flow and range of motion.  Deep tissue incorporates the use of pressure and friction applied to specific muscular issues.  Stretching is often used to assist in lengthening and releasing tension as well.

Deep tissue massage is recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, take part in heavy physical activity, and those recovering from physical injury. It is not uncommon to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache a day or two post massage (this is generally avoided by keeping hydrated post-massage).

Pre-natal/Pregnancy Massage:

Massage during pregnancy focuses on the specific needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through the childbirth experience. Pre-natal massage enhances the function of the muscles and joints, improves circulation and general body tone, helps to reduce fluid retention, and relieves mental and physical fatigue,  Not to mention, it just plain feels good. there are many other benefits for the mom-to-be and her baby, too.  Touch is vital to the mother’s physical and emotional well-being as she adapts to her changing body. Massage gives the mother-to-be the special attention she deserves, which in turn nurtures the new life growing inside her.

Massage during pregnancy is usually safe for most mothers. Please contact me if you are having any complications so that we can determine whether massage is right for you at this time.

Swedish Massage:

Swedish massage is what many refer to as relaxation massage.  It is designed to do just that using a combination of effluerage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), friction,  tapotement (rhythmic tapping), and vibration/shaking.  Swedish massage is helpful in reducing joint stiffness, improving circulation, and encouraging a general sense of well-being. Pressure is generally light to medium, and recommended for anyone looking for a little mental vacation.
